 "TAPERISTAS"
NUTRITION & ENVIRONMENT
 In collaboration with K. P. E. Arnaias.

The "Taperistas" program was implemented at our school from 1/11/2022 to 10/5/2022.  It was included in the syllabus of the Home Economics course for Grade A.  We 've chosen this program for our students to gain knowledge, sensitivity and empathy for the environment and the quality of food they consume.

Initially, the students were taught basic concepts on nutrition and were given a questionnaire related to their eating habits.

Then, we designed the "healthy food pyramid" and the "food footprint pyramid" so that students would be able to identify the foods they should reduce or avoid consuming.

The students learned about the value of nutrients and the usefulness of daily meals as well as the correct content of each meal.  At this point the importance of breakfast was emphasized.  One of our activities involved preparing and eating breakfast in school.

The students were given a relevant table so that they could fill in the ingredients of their early lunch break, as well as the kitchenware they use to bring their food to to school.  Another activity was the preparing of their lunch break and its consuming at the school.

Regarding food packaging, students learned to identify which materials are recycled or can be reused or must be discarded.  At the same time, they learned about food types that are hazardous for the environment during their preparation, which foods can be composted and how students can avoid processed foods.

Finally, the students recorded the basic principles for "Ecological Consciousness", made a table their new, improved food choices per day and created an art project with recyclable food packaging materials.

Our students were impressed with the results of the research. The video material they watched additionally helped them realise further, the importance of food quality in relation to their health and the protection of the environment.

For all these reasons, we deemed it necessary for our school to participate in the "Taperistas" program again this year.
